Body and the East: From the 1960s to the Present: Moderna Galerija Ljubljana = Museum of Modern Art by Zdenka Badovinac,
with essays by Joseph Backstein, Iara Boubnova, Jurij Krpan, Ileana Pintilie, Kristine Stiles, Branka Stipancic, Igor Zabel, and othersThe earliest "body art" was created in Eastern Europe in the early 1960s. The term "body art" includes a wide range of practices in which the artist's own body is the bearer of social, political, metaphorical, and philosophical content. This book includes essays on eighty artists from fourteen countries: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, the former GDR, Hungary, Lithuania, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Yugoslavia. Introductory essays by Zdenka Badovinac and Kristine Stiles discuss the tradition of an art form that emerged during socialism in cultural centers such as Prague, Belgrade, Ljubljana, Warsaw, and Zagreb. In these places public actions, particularly on the street, were often banned--and artists arrested--by the police. Therefore many of the actions documented here took place in private apartments, with the artists performing at great personal risk. The art survived not only despite the absence of any art market, but also despite its marginalization by political regimes. The artists turned their marginalization to an advantage, creating art out of the contingencies and necessities of survival. The art represented here reminds us of the psychological and intellectual freedoms that artistic expression affords under politically repressive conditions. This bilingual (Slovenian/English) book was originally published in conjunction with a major retrospective exhibition of body art held last year at the Museum of Modern Art in Ljubljana. Some of the artists, such as Marina Abramovic and Komar &Melamid, are well known internationally. Others, such as Alexander Brener, Sanja Ivekovic, Laibach, Paul Neagu, and Marko Peljhan, are known to special audiences in the East and West.

Internet Art
Internet Art
When the Internet emerged as a mass global communication network in the mid-1990s, artists immediately recognized the exciting possibilities for creative innovation that came with it. Alter a century of unprecedented artistic experimentation, individuals and groups were quick to use the new technologies to question and radically redefine the conventions of art, and to tackle some of the most pressing social, political, and ethical issues of the day. Covering email art, Web sites, artist-designed software, and projects that blur the boundaries between art and design, product development, political activism, and communication, "Internet Art shows how artists have employed online technologies to engage with the traditions of art history, to create new Conns of art. and to move into fields of activity normally beyond the artistic realm. The book investigates the ways Internet art resists and shifts assumptions about authorship, originality, arid intellectual property; the social role of the artist; issues ol identity, sexuality, economics, and power; and the place of the individual in the virtual, networked age. Throughout, the views of artists, curators, and critics offer an insider's perspective on the subject, while a timeline and glossary provide easy-to-follow guides to the key works, events, and technological developments that have taken art into the twenty-first century.

Ian Wallace (artist) - Born in 1943, Ian Wallace is one of the pioneering forces behind Vancouver's establishment as an unlikely capital city of the 1970s globalized conceptual art scene. Trained as an art historian and practicing as a contemporary art history and art theory professor for many years in the seventies and eighties, Wallace was instrumental in developing the city's emblematic brand of so-called 'photo-conceptualism' or 'post-conceptual photography', made world-famous by his most celebrated 'student' Jeff Wall.

Fan art - Fan art or fanart is a type of artwork that is based on a person or item that the artist did not create. The term is usually used to denote any art that has been created in this manner, although, strictly speaking, "fan art" means art derived from a visual medium, like comics, or movies, and it makes use of existing artwork - as opposed to book illustration, which uses no visual reference but the artist's imagination of characters described by ...

Contemporary artist - Contemporary artists must deal on a regular basis on the intention and message behind their art, and increasingly, issues such as site-specificity and choice of materials are becoming more and more relevant in the broadcasting of both their message and the physical aesthetic of their artwork. Art is put to the service of generating a sense of authenticity and uniqueness of place for quasi-promotional agendas, one of the fundamental ideas behind the artwork is to create a dialogue between artists, the locality and the public, ...

Yellow House Artist Collective - The Yellow House was an artist's collective in Australia started by Sydney artist Martin Sharp. Between 1970 and 1973, The Yellow House, near Kings Cross, was a piece of living art and a mecca to pop art.
