Victoria Wood's new six-part situation comedy, Dinnerladies, was seen by over 9-million viewers per episode when first broadcast on BBC at the end of 1998. A whole new series begins in late 1999 following the re-broadcast of the initial six episodes. This is the TV tie-in of the autumn and includes all the scripts plus illustrations for the first series, plus new writing by Victoria Wood. Dinnerladies is about five women who work in the canteen of a factory outside Manchester. They come to work, they put on their overalls, they walk about with their bean tins, they serve the dinners, they wash up, and they go home. But within that daily routine they bicker, fall out, run into the toilet crying, plan romances, weigh themselves, fantasize, try and read the television pages without their glasses. Bren (Victoria Wood) is the strong center of the group. She actually enjoyed scraping bits of dinner into plastic dustbins. The only bluebottle in her custard is her mother Petula Gordeno (Julie Walters). And, oh what a mother! Serving alongside Bren are Jean, Dolly, Anita and Twinkle, the other dinnerladies. Plus Tony and Stan, the men who make life interesting. The Dinnerladies book takes you inside the canteen and the making of a Victoria Wood sitcom. It includes not just the scripts for the first series but all the candid banter plus Victoria Wood's own candid snaps taken on the set.
