Laughter: An Essay on the Meaning of the Comic In this great philosophical essay, Henri Bergson explores why people laugh and what laughter means. Written at the turn of the twentieth century, "Laughter explores what it is in language that makes a joke funny and what it is in us that makes us laugh. One of the functions of humor, according to Bergson, is to help us retain our humanity during an age of mechanization. His belief in life as a vital impulse, indefinable by reason alone, informs his perception of comedy as the relief we experience upon distancing ourselves from the mechanistic. Bergson's thought-provoking insights (e.g., "It seems that laughter needs an echo. Our laughter is always the laughter of a group.") keep this work ever-relevant as a thesis on the principles of humor.
Laughter in Interaction by Phillip J. Glenn, Bringing together twenty-five years of research on the sequential organization of laughter in everyday talk, Phillip Glenn analyzes recordings and transcripts to indicate the finely-detailed coordination of human laughter. He demonstrates that its occurrence, relative to talk and other activities, reveals much about its emergent meaning and effects. The book considers laughter's significant role in how people display, respond to, and revise identities and relationships.
Laughter - Laughter is the biological reaction of humans to moments or occasions of humor: an outward expression of amusement. Laughter is subcategorised into various groupings depending upon the extent and pitch of the laughter: giggles, clicks (which can be almost silent), chortles, chuckles, hoots, cackles, sniggers and guffaws are all types of laughter. Tanganyika Laughter Epidemic - The Tanganyika Laughter Epidemic of 1962 was an outbreak of mass psychogenic illness in the vicinity of the village of Kashasha on the western coast of Lake Victoria in the modern nation of Tanzania. Due to its nature the incident has been confused with positive humorous and/or infectious laughter as seen in phenomena like the Holy Laughter movement. Dark Laughter - Dark Laughter was Sherwood Anderson's 1925 novel which took up much the same theme as his 1923 novel Many Marriages, though he read James Joyce's Ulysses in between. The influence of "Ulysses" is clear in Dark Laughter. Present Laughter - Present Laughter is a comedic play written by Noel Coward and first staged in 1939 as part of a double bill with his lower middle-class domestic drama This Happy Breed; in 1941 the double bill was expanded to include Coward's new play Blithe Spirit. Coward himself starred in Present Laughter during the original run; later productions have featured actors such as Frank Langella and Simon Jones in the lead role.
